Fire Safety and Carpet Tiles

Healthcare, transport hubs, high-rise residential common areas and all other high-risk settings may require a high classification for both fire performance and smoke production. It could be argued that smoke production is as important as the fire performance rating as it often proves to be the biggest and quickest killer!

BS EN 13501-1 is a European code

This code measures how different flooring types react in fire situations.
An example of a classification code is: Bfl – S1

Breakdown of the classification codes

A Non-combustible = (stone, concrete or ceramic tiles)
B Very limited contribution to a fire – resisting spread up to a heat flux of at least 8.0kW/m2
C Limited contribution to a fire – resisting spread up to a heat flux of at least 4.5kW/m2
D Normal flammability = (untreated timber or some natural rubber flooring)

Fl is the abbreviation for ‘Flooring’ rather than coverings for ceilings or walls

S is the abbreviation for ‘Smoke Production’

S1 Lowest possible quantity and speed – which keeps escape routes clearer for longer
S2 Moderate quantity and speed of smoke production
S3 Higher quantity and speed of smoke production
