Our secrets for success – Laying and Fitting Carpet Tiles Like a Professional
Before you start
- Make sure you order enough tiles to fit your space (link to blog post re. tile calculator and measuring space).
- Make sure you order the correct type and amount of carpet tile adhesive (link to blog post about adhesives)
- It’s best practice to acclimatize your new carpet tiles in similar conditions to where they’ll be laid for at least 24 hours before installation if you can.
- Prepare your sub-floor so it is clean, level and dry.
Making carpet tiles easy to install
- It is best to start in the centre of the room. Mark the middle of the room with a chalk line cross and start loose-laying your tiles from the centre of that cross towards the door, rather than starting to lay your tiles from the doorway inwards.
- Adjust the centre point to avoid cut tiles in the doorway, or uneven or narrow gaps around the perimeter.
- Lay the tiles from the adjusted centre point along the lines of the cross.
- Once you are happy with the position of your starting cross, fill in the four quadrants and then do the perimeter cuts.
- Adhesive will stop the tiles from slipping or moving.
Our adhesive top tip:
Use spray adhesive on every third row to keep the tiles in place and only ever spray the back of the tile or the floor, definitely never both. (If you put adhesive on both, the tile will be very difficult to lift again if you need to make minor corrections during laying or changes in the future).
- Cutting the edge tiles and getting them to fit nicely can be tricky. Please look at our fitting guide for how to measure and fit the tiles around the edge properly.
- Remember, DO NOT start to fit against a wall; your carpet tiles won’t line up properly if the wall is even slightly ‘out’.
After you’ve fitted your new carpet tiles
- Always try to retain a few spares to replace any damaged or stained tiles in case of spills or other unfortunate events in the future.
- Follow our top tips for keeping your carpet tiles looking their best.
